More War Movies

1.  Hacksaw Ridge 2016 - biographical war drama based on 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector. The film focuses on the WWII experiences of Pfc. Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) an American pacifist combat medic who as a Seventh Day Adventist refused to carry or use a weapon.. Doss became the first conscientious objector ever to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa.. The movie highlights the bravery and compassion that Pfc. Doss showed by risking his life to ultimately save 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa.. I thought it was inspiring and thought provoking.. and film well worth watching..

2.  The Deer Hunter 1978 - is an epic war drama about a trio of Russian American steelworkers whose life were forever changed after they fought in the Vietnam War..  The three soldiers were played in the film by Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken and John Savage.. John Cazale also played in this film as he was losing his battle with cancer.. Meryl Streep played a supporting role..

In 1968, Michael (DeNiro), Nick (Walken) and Steven (Savage) are lifelong friends and working class steelworkers in Pennsylvania who prepare to ship out overseas following Steven's wedding and one final hunting trip.. In Vietnam their dreams are forever shattered by the stark inhumanities of war.. even those who survive are haunted by the tragic haunting nightmarish events they experienced..

I have to be honest this film has forever haunted me.. I remember watching it when it first came out.. and how gut wrenching it was.. This film is one you will not soon forget.. as it is poignant, horrifying, traumatic and cruel beyond belief.. I have to be honest.. I remember very little of the Vietnam War as it ended when I was just 14 years of age.. That being said I do remember watching it on the news.. and of course the coverage of the protests..  However this classic film is truly gripping and one that everyone should see at least once..

3.  Black Hawk Down 2001 - is a war drama based on the 1999 non fiction book by the same name by journalist Mark Bowden.. Bowden covered the 1993 special forces raid in Mogadishu, Somalia by the US military aimed at capturing faction leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid.. the film follows the Black Hawk helicopters that were unexpectedly attacked by Somalian forces .. Battle of Mogadishu..
This film is really amazing.. disastrous.. graphic and packed full of action.. a definite must see

The film follows a platoon of US Marines through their training, especially two privates Joker (Matthew Modine) and Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio) who struggle to get through boot camp under their drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R.Lee Hemey).. It also highlights the experiences of the Marines in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War..
This is an classic film filled with intense drama and is a gut wrenching engaging portrayal of what war soldiers endure..  Totally engrossing.. and well worth watching..

5.  Platoon 1986 - is a classic war drama film with an outstanding cast including Tom Berenger, William Defoe, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Depp and many others.. The film is based on Oliver Stone's experience from the war.. and follows a US Army 1967 volunteer Chris Taylor (Sheen) fighting in the war while his two sergeants (Berenger and DeFoe) argue over the leadership of the platoon.. Stone wrote the story based on his experiences as an infantryman in Vietnam.. to counter those of war portrayed in films such as John Wayne's The Green Berets..

The film highlights how real the war becomes for Taylor once he is in country and in the middle of battle.. where his idealism fades.. The film is packed with dramatic scenes, violence, gripping realism with a dynamic ending.. The film is truly epic and a definite must see

6.  The Hurt Locker 2008 - is a war drama thriller.. The film follows an Iraq War Explosive Ordinance Disposal team who are targeted by insurgents.. highlighting the immense psychological reactions to the stress of combat.. Amazing story.. considering that ordinance plays a huge part of war.. The film is packed with intense drama, suspense, action and gut wrenching emotion.. The film met with mixed reviews but I loved it.. and feel like it is truly an amazing film.. and one well worth watching..

The film is notable for its graphic portrayal of war especially during the opening to the movie which depicts the Omaha Beach assault during the Normandy landings.. The film follows US Army Rangers Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) and a squad as they search for paratrooper Pfc. James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) who is the last surviving brother of four servicemen..
